Wicking is the movement of water by capillary action without the assistance of gravity. In a gardening or horticulture context, it is the upward movement of water through soil, giving plants the ability to absorb water from below. Water wicking beds eliminate the problem of deciding when and how much to water.

What is WaterUps®?

Wicking is the movement of water by capillary action without the assistance of gravity. In a gardening or horticultural context, it is the upward movement of water through soil, giving plants the ability to absorb water from below. Water wicking beds eliminate the problem of deciding when and how much to water. They can last on average 4-6 weeks without watering. In contrast, surface watering is often required on a daily basis, depending on climatic conditions.  Apart from the frequency of watering, there is a saving of up to 85% of water in using the wicking method.

Up until the launch of WaterUps®, the main method of constructing wicking beds was to use river sand or scoria. WaterUps® have proven to be a much more cost-effective and commercially viable method of constructing wicking beds. They also operate more efficiently.

Introducing WaterUps®.

The WaterUps® Wicking Cell is an Australian designed and manufactured product that can be used in a wide variety of watering situations. The Wicking Cells are modular in nature to allow them to be custom fitted to the shape and size of any growing environment large or small.

If need be, they can also be cut or shaped to allow them to work in all manner of growing containers, gardens or landscape designs.

Add that rustic look to any landscape with an Aqualess designed and built custom bed.

For example, this garden bed was finished with a high UV decking oil and fully lined inside with quality pond liner and as a result, it will last for many years. It was made with a false floor that is raised off the ground to create a comfortable access height of 800mm.

Aqualess will design and custom build you a garden bed to fit your environment. We fill all our garden beds with the best quality blend of soil for the plants being grown. In addition, we combine worm castings and worms throughout the soil for that extra boost of nutrients, and this is then topped with sugarcane mulch.

Solid timber single tree planters are ideal for fruit trees and can also have wheels mounted for easy repositioning to suit the conditions.

As well as solid Australian hardwood timber beds, Aqualess has developed a range of stylish corrugated iron and recycled Australian hardwood timber beds which we call our Billabong range. We have a series of standard sizes available plus we can build these to whatever size you need.

They also can be made mobile with reinforced bases and stainless steel castors with brakes. These beds can either be fitted with liner and the WaterUps® Wicking Cells or made so that you can place multiples of the WaterUps® square single-cell planters in them. This enables you to add and remove individual planters based on what is in season and what you would like to feature at any given time.
